Once our bookcases were finished being built it was time to decorate! My favorite part of course! When we picked out the design for the bookcase I was very specific in the fact that I wanted 8 small spaces vs 4 large spaces. This divider in the bookcases for me made it easier for me to decorate. The key in my decorating style is symmetry, I wanted the opening to be full but centered. Here are my tips on decorating bookshelves
Tip 1: Add functionality: I started with the baskets on the bottom, at first they were just for decorating then they became useful for Magazines and other odds and ends we want to keep hidden. These basest were a simple way to fill the space and who doesn’t love more storage!
Tip 2: Add Decor to fit your personality: I was looking for large and small items in darker colors to offset the bright white built-ins. First stop was Michael’s craft store, they have a large selection of vintage décor, I picked up a clock, an “H”, and some greenery. My style is vintage/French farmhouse so I love blacks/greys/neutrals and a pop of color. For the bookshelves my pop of color is green!
Tip 3: Adding personal touch: Homegoods is another great place for decor! Now Homegoods and I have a love hate relationship. Sometimes I love it and sometimes I leave empty handed, so it took me a couple tries to get everything I needed. Keep in mind when decorating a large space, it does not happen overnight, it takes a many trips to the store it get it right! From Homegood I purchased, another clock, a vintage beer bottle (have to incorporate some manly for the hubby), an awesome bike, more greenery, and some picture frames. I added some of our wedding pictures to bring some life into the bookshelves. Final store (and you will learn my favorite store) Target! Here I found some bike bookends, more frames, and other farmhouse/vintage odds and ends.
Tip 4: BOOKS!: Bookshelves are not complete with out books! I used these are fillers and to add height to different items that needed a lift. I was able to find tons of old cloth wrapped books from a friend, these just added the vintage, farmhouse style.
Tip 5: Put it all together: This took a lot of arranging and rearranging but it is fun to just play till you get it the way you want it! There is not right or wrong just right or wrong for you! I still move things around and will always move things around. You will come along new finds and want to add them!
Hope you enjoyed!
